Planning 2022: 3 great expectations

“We changed again, and yet again, and it was now too late and too far to go back, and I went on. And the mists had all solemnly risen now, and the world lay spread before me.” The quote is from Charles Dickens’ Great Expectations and it perfectly summarizes how we feel about the new year.

With the COVID-19 pandemic still ongoing and new restrictions in place, 2021 may have looked like a longer 2020. But, in fact, there were many reasons to rejoice:  Portugal was named best European Destination and 2nd best European country for new businesses, our digital ranking increased higher than ever and so did our English proficiency level.

Now comes 2022. And a few changes on the horizon. Should we fear those changes? Not really. In fact, we should embrace them! And there are 3 reasons to do so! Let’s take a look?

1) Company investment will increase

Portuguese companies are expected to increase their investment in key areas, such as production, digital transformation, and sustainability. According to the FI Group, an international consultancy firm, more and more companies are looking into European funds to skyrocket their competitiveness.

2) More funding, more projects

In 2021, 30 foreign companies picked our country to launch their business. And that’s why we closed the year at almost 3 billion euros in foreign investment.

In the coming years, European funds will be critical for this very reason. With Portugal’s Recovery and Resilience Plan ongoing and Portugal 2030 in the works, we’re talking about 12.6 billion euros for Portugal-based companies to develop their projects.

This means that 2022 is a year to shape the kind of future we want. And to close the gap with the rest of Europe, bringing forward more transportation networks, a joint effort in the fight against climate change, and more industry-university collaborations.

3) What’s next for Golden Visa

As of January 1st, Golden Visa legislation has new rules. If you’re considering a property investment, cities like Lisbon or Porto won’t be an option anymore, in an effort to shift investment towards the interior territories. As for capital transfer, the minimum has been set at 1.5 million euros.

Is it the end of Golden Visa? Not exactly. Whether you plan to live in rural areas or major cities, there are many ways to make a residential investment. And we can help you avoid the risk of losing time and money. Want to know how?
