Portugal is climbing higher in EU digital ranking

How much do you care about doing business in a country with strong e-commerce performance? AI use and cloud-based services are important for you? And what about connectivity, online public services, and individuals with good digital skills?

If you answered “very much”, then we have good news: Portugal has climbed three places in the 2021 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), now ranking 16th out of 27 countries in the European Union (EU).

The report was published this November and, according to the European Commission, Portugal has shown increases in 13 indicators compared to last year.

Online services and ICT specialists? We have it all!

Portugal may perform below EU average on basic digital skills, but it presents a higher share of individuals with above basic digital skills.

The share of female ICT specialists exceeds the EU average. And we take the lead in several other indicators, such as the use of ICT for environmental sustainability, SME’s selling online, cloud services, AI use, and online public services. Below you’ll see some of the highlights:

DESI 2021

Index categories Portugal score EU average
Individuals with above basic digital skills 32% 31%
% Female ICT specialists 22% 19%
Enterprises providing ICT training 23% 20%
SMEs selling online 19% 17%
e-Commerce turnover 16% 12%
At least 100 Mbps fixed broadband take-up 63% 34%
Enterprises with AI use 31% 25%

Are you someone who works from home or thinking about doing just that? If so, then the index also shows a high capacity for network and broadband coverage. This is perfect for you! After all, you may remember that just recently Lisbon was ranked the 3rd best city in the world for remote working.

By October, 2.131 new ICT businesses were created in Portugal. According to Informa D&B, this is an increase of 22%, when compared to 2020.
