Portugal makes the top 10 best English-speaking countries (again)!

Portugal is the 7^th nation in the whole world with the best English as a second language, according to the 2021 “EF English Proficiency Index”.

The ranking, comprising data from 2.2 million non-native English speakers, places Portugal in the top 10 for the second consecutive year. Scoring the “very high proficiency” mark, we are ready to welcome… and to understand you.

The best among southern nations

Quality of life, expat haven, Golden Visa opportunities… Choosing Portugal for your next endeavor may depend on a lot of factors. But, if you care about English proficiency, then this is perfect for you – especially when looking at the south of Europe!

Northern European nations may be known for their excellent English skills, but the index ranks Portugal higher than major southern countries like France (31st) or Spain (33rd).

Regarding our cities, Porto takes the lead on English proficiency, followed by Coimbra, Braga and Lisbon.
