The aforementioned Expat City Ranking is an annual survey conducted by InterNations since 2017, in which participants are asked to share their insights and experiences about living abroad – both in general terms and in the specific location they are currently at.

As already mentioned, the capital of Portugal is considered the 4th best location in the world for foreigners to live in. In order to receive such accolade, all the eligible cities were evaluated in 4 different criteria: quality of life; ease of setting in; working aboard; personal finance.
When it comes to Quality of Life, Lisbon is considered the 5th best in the world, scoring particularly high in the Environment & Climate, Safety & Security and Environment & Climate sub-rankings.
Lisbon also made it to the top 5 in the Ease of Setting In criteria, thanks in no small part to attributes such as the welcoming culture of the locals, the overall friendliness towards expats and the easiness of meeting new people in Portugal.
Finally, Lisbon is also ranked 5th in the Personal Finance Index, which should come as no surprise to anyone who has ever visited Portugal. In fact, the affordable cost of living and top-quality universities and infrastructures is too big an opportunity to ignore.
