Successful Golden Visa applications grew by 83% in April 2021

The possibility of purchasing a property in Portugal in order to obtain a residence permit, as well as the ability to freely travel within the European Union has been attracting the interest of foreign investors from all over the world.

Thanks to its remarkable quality of life, reduced costs of living (when compared to other European countries), warm sunny weather, and safety it’s easy to understand why Portugal has become a promising location for both foreign entrepreneurs and retirees.

And now that the effects of the COVID-19 crisis are dwindling due to the ongoing vaccination programs, international investment appears to be on the rise again. This is especially noteworthy because, from January 2022 onwards, the Golden Visa rules will change in this country.

2021 is the right moment to invest in Portugal

According to the newspaper Público, from January to April of the current year, the total investment in this country through the Golden Visa programme has reached 173,4 million euros, which is 17% more than what was invested in 2020.

If, however, we focus solely on the figures of April 2021, then we realize that the amount of investment has increased by almost 83%, in comparison with what was accomplished at the same moment of the previous year.

According to the same source, which cites data from the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF), the successful applicants of the Golden Visa program originated from countries such as China, Brazil, the United States, India, and Russia.

As already mentioned, however, the rules are about to change. In 2022, investments in Lisbon, Porto, and the coastal territories of Portugal will no longer be eligible for the Golden Visa incentive. Inland municipalities and second-tier cities, however, will still be open for investment.
