While Europe is currently facing new social, energetic, and economic challenges, the search for a safe and politically stable country in which to invest and reside is becoming more and more important for foreign entrepreneurs. Portugal is one of the available options.

Yes, you read that right. According to the most recent report issued by the Bank of Portugal, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in this country has increased by 467 million euros from January to September of this year, compared with the same period of 2021.

As a result, FDI in Portugal over the course of the first three quarters of 2022 has reached a total amount of 5,674 million euros.

Where do the top investors come from?

According to the same report, the bulk of FDI in Portugal has come from other nearby territories within the European Union (EU) – totaling more than 75% of the foreign investment –, namely: Spain, Germany, Luxembourg, and France.

On the other hand, interest in Portugal from non-EU entrepreneurs has come predominantly from the United Kingdom (responsible for 6.3% of FDI stock). Also worthy of note, however, is the investment carried by citizens from the United States.

It should be mentioned, however, that Portugal has become an interesting doorway for foreign investors hoping to obtain a permit to start a business and reside within the European Union, thanks to its advantageous tax regimes and Golden Visa programme.

Why Portugal?

Apart from the above-mentioned benefits, Portugal has also become notable in the international scene thanks to its burgeoning startup ecosystems, not the mention its world-class Universities and Business Schools.

But don’t let yourself be impressed just because of this country’s economic competitiveness. Portugal is also synonymous with quality of living, and the guarantee of political and social safety and stability, not to mention the wonderful climate.
