D7 Visa: An easy path to living in Portugal with your family!

Have you ever thought of living in Portugal, even though you don’t feel comfortable or have enough funds to make an investment? Thankfully, you still can! Whether you are an aspiring entrepreneur or a retiree, you should consider applying for the D7 Visa.

As its name suggests, The Portugal Passive Income Visa allows non-EU, non-EEA or Swiss citizens the right to reside in this country, provided they prove they are in receipt of a reasonable and regular passive income.

Eligible earnings for the D7 Visa may include:

  • Pensions;
  • Real estate;
  • Transferable equity;
  • Financial investment;
  • Intellectual property.

Why should I consider the D7 Visa?

Expats who have been granted the D7 Visa are allowed to reside in Portugal and to freely travel throughout the Schengen Area, just like regular European citizens. Naturally, this means they are entitled to study, kickstart their own business, or work in this country.

Among access to national healthcare services, one of the key advantages of the D7 Visa is the ability for applicants to extend these residency rights to close family members, namely: their spouse, dependent children, or parents.

Naturally, people who successfully applied for this Passive Income Visa may also benefit from the Portuguese Non-Habitual Resident (NHR) status, allowing foreigners to take advantage of one of the best tax regimes in the world.

Last but not least, the D7 Visa may also qualify you for both permanent residency and access to Portuguese citizenship, following a period of five years.

How does it work?

In order to apply for the D7 Visa, candidates will have to prove they meet the minimum income requirements. The nature of such amount will depend on the number of family members the applicant would like to include.

As of 2021, the minimum funding requirements are:

  • €7.980 per year for the first adult (12 x €665);
  • €3.990 per year for each secondary adult, such as spouse or parents (12 x €332,50);
  • €2.394 per year for each child (12 x €199,50).

Expats who successfully applied for a D7 Visa will obtain a temporary residency card (valid for two years). Afterward, they must renew their Visa (which will become valid for a new period of three years).

Once they have lived in Portugal for at least five years, foreigners may then apply for a permanent residence permit and for national citizenship.
